How I satisfied the design requirement with a technical report

I graduated in Chemical Engineering in 1990 from an Indian University and since then have worked in both Asia and Australia mainly as a process design engineer for the hydrocarbon industry.

Getting chartered had been on my "things-to-do" list for a long time after first becoming an Affiliate member of IChemE. I attended a Get Chartered presentation in Brisbane, Australia, and decided to take the plunge and apply. Getting chartered was important to me in order to demonstrate my continuing professional development and be recognised as a competent professional.

When I started my application, I learnt from IChemE that my degree was not accredited by IChemE. I was then advised to submit a Technical Report in order to complete my application and satisfy the education requirement. I was able to use a previous project that I had worked on and compile a report that met the requirements. I selected a project that our team did on slops upgrading in one of the large crude oil terminals. I was also asked to submit an addendum to my Competence and Commitment report to provide more information in certain areas.

Next I was interviewed by two IChemE Fellows. The first part of the phone interview was on the Technical Report and was more of a lively technical discussion on the project. The interviewers were looking for originality in the work and the outcomes from the key role I played.

The second half of the interview focussed on my C&C report. Again this was an interesting professional discussion on my career path which contains process engineering experience on a number of oil & gas, LNG and refinery projects where applying chemical engineering principles is a routine affair. So I did not have much difficulty convincing the interviewers.

Not having an IChemE accredited degree is not a stumbling block to getting chartered. As someone who did it, I can say that it is not difficult and would encourage people to apply. I must add that the whole exercise was very smooth due to prompt and cooperative support from IChemE personnel.
