Who else is Getting Chartered?

C&C vs T&E: How I translated my Training and Experience
report into my Competence and Commitment report
 |
Advantages of Competence
and Commitment format
It was a lot easier than I expected to transfer the experience
from the old format to the new: My T&E report was well
structured so it was straightforward to cut and paste into
the new Competence and Commitment report format. |
Also the competencies I need to demonstrate on Form C now
mirror what I will need to demonstrate at interview, so I feel
I will be more prepared for what is to come later in the peer
review process.
Loss of introduction
In the T&E report I felt the introduction allowed you
to give some background to each of your various projects so
that you could then refer to “project A” briefly
in the main report without using up word space explaining the
brief etc.
I felt happier when I realised a CV is submitted along with
Form C so that the assessor can gain an idea of the projects
and job roles you have been involved in before reading the
report.
Section D - Commitment to profession
I was unclear about how I could expand further than “I
follow company standards” in section D of the Competence
and Commitment report, where you provide evidence you are committed
to high standards of your profession.
I was advised that I should detail particular company standards
relevant in my area of work, but also that examples of commitment
to profession can include:
- Keeping up to date with advancing technology
- Training other colleagues
- Voluntary work for professional bodies such as IChemE
- Working with government and environmental organisations
to raise the profile of chemical engineers and their needs.
Continuing Professional Development
For the CPD section, I wasn’t sure whether to just
list all the courses I’ve done. Often graduate training
courses are quite rigid and don’t allow us much choice
about what we want to do.
After talking to IChemE staff, I realised they are looking
for a narrative summary which shows I have an idea about where
my career as an engineer is heading and what training / experience
I’ll need to achieve my goals. In order to get Chartered,
IChemE want to see I am directing my career and not just drifting.
They also said CPD isn’t only attending courses, but
on-the-job-learning, reading books / technical reports and
advice from peers and specialists and attending professional
events.
Summary
All in all I feel happy to convert to the new Competence
and Commitment format and feel that it was relatively easy
to do so.
