What is CEnv?

The CEnv designation demonstrates virtuosity in and commitment to sustainable environmental management and development.

The Society for the Environment (SocEnv) was granted a Royal Charter in 2004 allowing IChemE and other Constituent Bodies to grant the Chartered Environmentalist qualification (CEnv) to existing Corporate Members.

Neeraj Shah CEng CEnv MIChemE MIOSH

Veolia Water Industrial Outsourcing Ltd

My current job role is Environmental, Health and Safety Manager for Veolia Water Industrial Outsourcing Ltd. VWIOL works in partnership with industry to provide environmentally aware, cost-effective water processing, recycling and wastewater management.

My role includes all aspects of environment, safety and health legislation as well as good practice implementation within VWIOL and at client facilities. I also deliver front line practical support primarily to development and operations to ensure that principles of sustainable development and environmental responsibility are met.

By introducing CEnv, The Society for the Environment hope to provide a platform where environmentalists can share common goals, share best practice and positively contribute to issues about sustainability

I gained the CEnv designation so I could unite with similar professionals to work towards ensuring a better quality of life for everyone, now and in generations to come.

Dow Corning Ltd

I am a Chemical Engineer with a BEng from Birmingham and an EngD from Cardiff, working for Dow Corning Ltd in South Wales. We have a large manufacturing site there and are always looking for new ways to improve our environmental performance. I look after the site’s environmental management system (EMS) and ensure we maintain our ISO14001 registration.

I wanted to gain Chartered Environmentalist status because it provides a professional endorsement of a personal desire to improve environmental issues. After a number of years working in the Environmental Department, it is good to have some formal recognition of that experience.

With two small children, your horizons suddenly stretch a lot further and the long term effects of actions taken today are always on your mind. I hope that by joining the Society for the Environment, I can help to encourage improved consideration of environmental impacts across far wider areas than would otherwise be possible.

Environmental improvements are far easier to achieve if everyone is committed to the same sustainability goals. With three Chartered Environmentalists now in our Department, perhaps it is no surprise that Dow Corning was recognized for its sustained environmental best practice at the Wales Environment Awards 2005.

Kevan Brian CEnv

Process engineer

I am a process engineer in the wastewater field. My daily activities have a direct effect on the Environment. All the drivers from my clients regarding upgrading wastewater discharges are related to avoidance or mitigation of environmental effects.

My role is in treatment plant operation and design, as well as obtaining discharge consents from Regional Councils (similar to the UK’s Environment Agency).

I chose CEnv because the Society for the Environment (SocEnv) focuses on core environmental issues rather than chemical engineering issues which are the core focus of IChemE.

SocEnv does not have a huge profile over in NZ yet, however I understand they are trying to achieve awareness of and focus on sustainability and other environmental issues. SocEnv and the CEnv qualification reflect the work me and my employers are involved in and an area I have a personal interest in.
