Chartered Scientist
What is CSci?
The CSci designation reflects best practice in science and
is set at a benchmark level throughout the science professions.
Revalidation takes place every 5 years to ensure standards
are maintained.
The Science Council was granted a Royal Charter in 2003 allowing
IChemE and other Licensed Bodies to award the Chartered Scientist
qualification (CSci).

Science Council
The Science Council seeks to promote the advancement and
dissemination of knowledge of and education in science, pure
and applied.
The Science Council is a leading independent body with a
membership of over 25 professional institutions and learned
societies, supported by their member networks of more than
300,000 scientists across the breadth of science and mathematics.

Achieving Chartered Scientist
Existing Chartered Members of IChemE
In order to gain the Chartered Scientist qualification as
an existing Chartered Member of IChemE, you are required to:
- Complete a Competence and Commitment report .
- Undergo a professional interview, both of which are peer
assessed.
Within the Competence and Commitment report:
- Section A should be approximately 1000 words, outlining
evidence of: Application of scientific knowledge to practical situations
within chemical engineering context
- Section E should be a 200 – 300 word summary to
demonstrate that you maintain a continued professional development
plan.
Non-Chartered members of IChemE
You may apply for the CSci registration at the same time
as you apply for Chartered Chemical Engineer MIChemE, and
in addition to, or instead of CEng.
To apply for Chartered Scientist registration only you will
need to submit, along with a full application for Chartered
Member:
- One Section A of the Competence & Commitment report with
reference to: Application of scientific knowledge to practical situations
within chemical engineering context
- You will also be required to attend a brief professional interview
based on the above.
To apply for both Chartered Scientist and Chartered Engineer
registrations you will need to submit, along with a full application
for Chartered Member:
One Section A of the Competence & Commitment report with
reference to:
Application of scientific knowledge to practical situations
within chemical engineering context
- And one Section A with reference to:
Application of chemical engineering knowledge and understanding
to practical situations
- You will also be required to attend two brief professional
interviews based on the above.
