Who else is Getting Chartered?
Professor Nilay Shah CEng FIChemE
I was elected straight to Fellow
 |
I graduated in Chemical Engineering
in 1988 and went on to do a PhD. Other than a short spell
at Shell, I have been working in academia ever since.
My research is in the "Process Systems Engineering" field,
where we apply systems modelling and optimisation techniques
to a wide variety of process engineering problems at
all sorts of scales.

I had been an Associate Member of IChemE for a long time and
had kept meaning to become Chartered, but was worried that
the process would be very complicated and my lack of sustained
industrial experience might be an impediment.
However, when I had a look at what was actually involved,
I realised the Competence and Commitment format is very straightforward
and flexible, and looks for the demonstration of competencies
that are indeed used in an academic environment. Now that the
old T&E format has been replaced by a much simpler form,
I have been able to draw on my varied experiences in academia
very readily and complete the process without too much difficulty.
I applied via the standard route for Corporate membership by writing a Competence
and Commitment report. However, because I have occupied some positions of significant
responsibility within the university and have been involved in a variety of
activities in support of IChemE, I was to my pleasant surprise elected directly
to Fellow.
I would definitely recommend that senior academics interested
in achieving Chartership through IChemE should explore this
possibility.
